This was released today, and has already made it to Slashdot as well!

Question is… is this good for Ryzom, will it grow, will it actually get a boost from this?

Well, read the FAQ, but not sure what this means for Ryzom, have the devs given up on it?

This was the main reason I came back to this game
I already got the code checked out and got both server and client to compile, and was able to connect to their open shard server for testing.
Kassie, Open Source doesn’t mean they gave up on it. It’s probably one of the best thing they could have done for the game. My guess is that Winch Gate wanted to do this all along, but they spent the last years or so cleaning up the code to get it to a state that can be open sourced (no security holes, less messy code, more organized, etc).
What it means for ryzom is that they’ll have a huge community of developers that will use the engine to code whatever, either for ryzom or for their own games. Anything that’s useful, WG can look at and maybe pull it back to Ryzom. For example, if someone use it to implement an in-game items mailing, or an auction house, Winch Gate can look at it and if they like it, they’ll pull in the code and tweak it to ryzom.
Open Source is a good thing for any projects. It’s not giving up, it’s being smart
FYI – there’s a small influx of newbies and returning oldbies returning already b/c of this, because of the exposer. There are pple trying the game for the first time because they never heard of it and want to try it, to at least help them understand the code. Who knows, maybe they’ll like the game and stick around too, so that’s already a good thing.

Oh as an aside, when Nevrax went bankrupt the first time, there was a huge push to get the game Open Source like it did now, but Spider what not somewhere nabbed it and outbid the community that was taking donations from the public, and then destroyed the game… boo.
That set ryzom back a few years, I say.
