Ryzom, tips and tricks

Backing up your save directory and screen shots

If you don’t like losing all your flags and window positions when the game is being patched, you have to make a backup of your Ryzom save directory. Doing so at intervals is actually a good idea too.

This little backup script does just that: it backs up your save folder by creating a date-stamped directory inside it with all current toon config files. Additionally, it also creates a similar time-stamped directory under screenshots/, and moves the screen shots there.

To use the script, just download the file (right-click, Save as…), and rename it so that the extension is .bat instead of .txt.

Tested under Windows Vista, should probably work under older WinOS flavors.

Fandragor wrote a small application that allows per-toon saves and restores. Find details here.

Time on Atys

Information on the passing of time on Atys, and instructions for installing the Atys Date Displayer, is available here.

Getting support

Whenever something goes wrong with the server or the game client, and when downtime occurs, the place to get help and relief is the Ryzom chat channel, accessible via the official CeB or Klients. You can download Klients here, and log in with your usual game user name and password. Cross-platform packages are available at the CeB project home here.

Once you’re logged in, it’s a good idea to set your homin name with .set name {your homin name}. To query other participant’s name, type .finger {user name}. To start a private chat with another online member, type .tell {user name} {message}.

Viewing the map offline

Le Cercle des Profondeurs is working on an Atys map viewer, which accesses ryzom data to view the map. They will probably add the possibility to add your own flags at some stage, could be useful to have on a second monitor. The tool is called Tout’Atys (literally “all Atys”, a word play on Toutatis, Celtic god and protector of tribes) and is available here (right-click to zoom). Requires Java Web Start.

Zooming out and increasing performance

Some tweaks can be made to the client.cfg file, in your Ryzom application folder, to change some of the properties of the graphics engine. These tweaks are unsupported, so don’t blame Ryzom or Aeden Artisans if something goes wrong.

You can add the following line to increase the max zoom distance and view your toon with a bird’s eye (using the mouse wheel):

CameraDistMax        = 50.0000000000;

Some have found Ryzom uses fewer CPU cycles and no longer maxes out CPU usage by adding the line:

Sleep                = 1.0000000000;
